Robert Gordon's Hospital

Robert Gordon's Hospital
Biography
Robert Gordon was a merchant from Aberdeen who endowed his fortune to create a "Hospital" for boys' accommodation and education. The school opened in 1750 with 14 pupils, one teacher and one headmaster. Pupils had to be the son or grandson of a burgess who had fallen on hard times. The boys were given a practical education, and after their schooling were apprenticed to craftsmen or merchants with the school paying their fees. The number of pupils and staff grew until the building was extended from 1830-33. However, by 1881, the school was converted into a fee-paying day school, now known as Robert Gordon's College.
