Jack, Adolphus Alfred, Prof.

Biography

Born in 1868, Adolphus Jack was the son of the Professor of Mathematics at Glasgow University. He studied law and literature at Cambridge and graduated MA and LLM. In 1895, he was admitted barrister at Lincoln's Inn, London, and was appointed lecturer in English Language and Literature at Queen Margaret College, Glasgow. In 1902, he resigned and returned to London where he was an external lecturer for several institutions until 1908, when he was appointed to the Chair of English at Queen's College, London. In 1915 he accepted the Chair of English Literature at the University of Aberdeen. He remained in post until his retirement in 1937, publishing on poetry and prose of the early Victorian period as well as some plays of his own. He was awarded an honorary LLD by the University of Aberdeen in 1938. He died in 1946, bequeathing books to the University Library. his former colleague, Prof. C.C. Abbott, said of him: "He was a bookman to his fingertips, instinctive in taste, far-reaching in knowledge. Books overflowed wheresoever he was."
