Biography

Either: Church of Scotland minister and religious writer. M.A., University of St Andrews 1586. Entered ministry at Forfar 1590. Translated to St Andrews 1597, then Forgan, Fife 1606-09. Translated to second charge at South Leith, 1609, succeeded to first charge 1613. Published two devotional works, 1622 and 1625. Died Leith, 1627. Or: Bishop. M.A., University of St Andrews, 1593. Master of grammar school in Montrose, then Dundee 1597. Minister of Dundee 1604-18. Appointed to Scottish High Commission 1616. Bishop of Brechin, 1619. Active supporter of royal policy in the Kirk. Bishop of Edinburgh 1634. Prime target in the protests against the new prayer book introduced by Charles I. Refused to submit to the authority of the covenanters' general assembly, 1638, then deprived of his office and excommunicated. Fled to England, where he died in 1639 or 40.
