Biography
Politician and book collector. Born George Spencer 1766, took the additional name Churchill by royal licence in 1817. From birth took the courtesy title Marquess of Blandford. Educated Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, graduated M.A., 1786, and D.C.L. 1792. MP for Oxfordshire 1790-6 and Tregony 1802-4. Lord of the Treasury 1804-6. Called to the upper house as Baron Spencer 1806. Spent great sums on his gardens and library at White Knights, near Reading. Most of his collections were dispersed within his lifetime. Died at Blenheim 1840.
