Biography
Bishop of Aberdeen. Son of Sir Thomas Stewart of Minto. Born in Glasgow, educated at Univ. Of Glasgow. Studied canon law and theology abroad. L.L.D. Vicar of Lochmaben, rector of Ayr. Provost of Lincluden 1529. Lord high treasurer of Scotland 1530-7. Dean of Glasgow 1531. Bishop of Aberdeen 1532/3-45. Ambassador to England and France. Concluded peace treaty between James V and Henry VIII 1534. Chancellor of King's College, said to have founded King's College library, oversaw the building of the library, sacrist and jewel house. Died 1545. Album Amicorum Coll. Reg. states that Bishop Stewart "built the librarie hous and with a number of bookes furnisht the same." His coat-of-arms is stamped on some of the volumes which he owned, now held by Aberdeen University Library.
