Established in 2004, Akita International University (AIU) is a four-year liberal arts university located in Akita Prefecture, Japan. The university has over 200 partner institutions in more than 50 countries and regions worldwide. AIU offers a peaceful environment to study and immerse yourself in Japanese culture while providing a global setting, with international students making up about 25% of our student body. The university offers an English-only curriculum for all students and requires its degree-seeking undergraduates to complete a one-year study abroad as one of the graduation requirements.
Nestled in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, AIU is surrounded by lush nature and is just a short drive from Akita Airport, which offers direct flights to major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, and Nagoya. The nearby Akita Prefectural Central Park offers recreational opportunities, while the surrounding areas are known for rice fields, forested hills, and seasonal festivals. Akita beautifully reflects Japan’s four seasons with cherry blossoms in spring, rich greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and snowy winters.
AIU’s compact and interconnected campus encourages community and convenience: most buildings are linked by indoor walkways, making it easy to get around regardless of the weather. The award‑winning Nakajima Library, open 24/7, features stunning cedar‑wood architecture, advanced study spaces, and extensive academic resources. International students are required to live in on-campus housing and nearly all degree-seeking students do the same, so the AIU campus fosters direct interaction between Japanese and international students, enhancing both academic and cultural exchange. Additionally, AIU offers a variety of activities within the local community, providing a unique glimpse into rural Japanese life and culture.
