University of Tübingen

Innovative. Interdisciplinary. International. Since 1477. These have been the University of Tübingen’s guiding principles in research and teaching ever since it was founded. With this long tradition, the University of Tübingen is one of the most respected universities in Germany. Its institutional strategy was successfully selected for funding in the Excellence Initiative sponsored by the German federal and state governments, making Tübingen one of Germany’s eleven universities distinguished with that title of excellence. Tübingen has also proven its status as a leading research university in many national and international competitions – in key rankings Tübingen is listed among the best universities for the Humanities and Social Sciences as well as for Science and Medicine.

Tübingen lies in the heart of Europe, in one of Germany’s most scenic and economically dynamic regions. Just 30 km south of Stuttgart, it’s nestled between the Schönbuch Natural Park and the Swabian Alb. The city is known for its unique flair – a charming historic city center paired with the lively energy of a young, international student town. Nearly one third of the population are students, and with an average age of just 39, Tübingen ranks among Germany’s youngest cities. Here, centuries-old history meets with cutting-edge science, and festivals and events bring the city to life year-round.

The University of Tübingen is not a campus-based university - the University’s various institutions are located in various places around Tübingen. The oldest building of the University still in use today, the "Burse", was built in 1480. Several institutes and departments are based in Hohentübingen Castle, high above the city. The present building was largely erected in the Renaissance and stands on the site of an older castle, first mentioned in 1078.
