Founded in 1419, the University of Rostock is one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe and the oldest in the Baltic Sea region. Home to over 13,000 students, the university offers a wide range of programmes spanning disciplines such as engineering, natural sciences, medicine, humanities, and social sciences. The university combines historical academic excellence with cutting-edge research, emphasising both tradition and innovation. Internationalisation is a key focus, with students and staff hailing from over 90 countries. Research is organised around interdisciplinary areas of focus such as maritime systems, life sciences, ageing and digitisation. The university also plays a central role in Rostock's academic, cultural and social life.
Rostock is a historic Hanseatic city located on the northern coast of Germany, in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Situated on the Baltic Sea, it offers a blend of maritime heritage, modern urban life and natural beauty. The nearby seaside resort of Warnemünde provides beaches and a vibrant cultural scene, just a short tram ride away. Rostock boasts excellent transport links, including direct train services to Hamburg and Berlin, as well as ferry routes to Scandinavia. The region is renowned for its clean air, picturesque coastal landscapes and more affordable cost of living compared to larger German cities. With its combination of urban amenities and seaside relaxation, it is an attractive location for both study and leisure.
The University of Rostock has several campuses spread across the city. The largest of these is the South Campus, which boasts modern lecture halls and state-of-the-art research facilities. The historic main building in the city centre is an architectural landmark and a popular spot for students and tourists. Specialised campuses house faculties such as Medicine and Agricultural Sciences, each equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and libraries. The university library is one of the oldest in Northern Europe and boasts a valuable collection of rare manuscripts. A variety of student organisations, sports clubs and cultural associations enrich campus life. The campus atmosphere is welcoming, offering both modern facilities and a strong sense of academic tradition.
The University of Rostock, the third-oldest university in Germany, celebrated its 600th anniversary in 2019. It was the first university in the world to establish a faculty of engineering in 1951, demonstrating its pioneering role in engineering education. Rostock is also home to one of the world's largest sailing festivals, the Hanse Sail, in which students often volunteer or participate. The university’s motto, “Traditio et Innovatio”, reflects its balance between history and progress. Due to its coastal location, many students enjoy sailing, rowing and beach volleyball as part of university life. The combination of medieval heritage, a maritime spirit and modern research makes studying in Rostock a unique experience.
