The Language Centre has a long history of providing Language Training and support for students, staff and the wider community. We pride ourselves on the friendly yet professional services that we provide.

Want to learn a new language or continue your language learning?

The University of Aberdeen Language Centre offers a wide range of modern foreign language evening classes from beginners to advanced. We also offer evening IELTS preparation and English language courses for students whose first language is not English. The courses are open to University of Aberdeen staff, students and the general public. Students should note courses are for recreational purposes only and do not involve any form of assessment prior to the courses starting, during or after.

Course fees

  • General public - £192

  • University of Aberdeen student/staff/NHS staff receive one free class – you must use your UoA email/NHS email when booking - £176

You should book early to secure your place as there are limited spaces available on each course. Please enrol for your course on our online store.

Please note we will only advertise one term at a time. 

Registration

Please register for your course as soon as possible to avoid disappointment, especially in the level 1 classes. If your class is full when you go to book it, add your details to the waiting list as we may be able to add another class if staff availability and time permit.

Please enrol for your course on our online store. We only accept payment via our secure Online Store. Payment can be made by debit card, credit card or paypal. You will receive an email to confirm your place once we have received payment.

Please note that the cost of textbooks is not included in any course fees.

Payment for the term is due at the time of enrolment. You will not be permitted to attend classes if payment has not been made during the enrolment period and no place can be reserved for you on a course until you have paid.

Please note that we reserve the right to cancel any evening course which does not attract sufficient numbers. In this case you will have an opportunity to transfer to an alternative course or to receive a full refund

Your registration on a evening language course will be subject to our terms and conditions.

Language Centre - Evening Classes Terms and Conditions

Your registration on a Language Centre Evening Class course will be subject to the following terms and conditions:

1. Applicants must be over 17 years old to enrol. Participants under 17 years old will be removed from the course and will not receive a refund.

2. Course fees payment is required in advance of the course starting - please note that a place on the course will only be confirmed upon receipt of full payment through the Online Store.

3. Applicants are responsible for selecting a level that is suitable for them. Any queries can be made to the Language Centre admin team ahead of reserving a place. Following the application and payment for a course, our course fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

4. The Language Centre will seek to keep to the advertised course dates but reserves the right to alter times/dates in the event of unforeseen circumstances. Where we need to alter the course times/dates a course, we will email all students enrolled on that course to notify them of this decision.

You will have an opportunity to transfer to an alternative course or to receive a full refund. We endeavour to process all refunds within two weeks. It is not possible to attend an alternative course on a trial basis. If you request or attend an alternative course, we will not process a refund.

5. The Language Centre reserves the right to cancel any course which does not recruit a viable number of students. Where we need to cancel a course, we will email all students enrolled on that course to notify them of this decision.

You will have an opportunity to transfer to an alternative course or to receive a full refund. We endeavour to process all cancellation refunds within two weeks. It is not possible to attend an alternative course on a trial basis. If you request or attend an alternative course, we will not process a refund.

6. The Language Centre cannot accept responsibility for unforeseen changes in a participant's circumstances that may prevent attendance.

7. The payment is refundable if you decide to withdraw your application within 14 days of the payment.

8. For courses taking place over multiple weeks, the Language Centre reserves the right to cancel a class if the tutor is absent due to illness or other unavoidable circumstances. If a class must be cancelled, the tutor will arrange a replacement class at a time to suit the majority of students. If you are unable to attend the replacement class, we will process a partial refund.  We endeavour to process all refunds within two weeks. 

9. The University does not accept responsibility for losses or expenses incurred, however caused.

FAQs

Enrolment

I'm not sure what level I should enrol for. What can I do?

 

To ascertain which level is best suited for you, we recommend looking at the individual course content guides which detail the content covered in each level.  If there are aspects of a certain level that you would like to improve on or have not covered yet, then that level would be most appropriate for you.  Please read this content carefully and think about which level of course best suits your current knowledge of the language. 

I'm still not sure. Do you offer assessments?

 

We do not offer language level assessment.

What if I enrol in the wrong level?


Any request to change to a different course depends upon the availability of places and may not be granted. If you are unsure what level to choose, please have a look at the description of levels or contact us before making a purchase.

 

When do your classes run?

 

Mondays-Fridays, 6PM-8PM
Term 1: October - January 

Term 2: February - May

Term 3: May - July

Where do your classes run?

 

The majority of our evening language courses are in-person but some are online.  Online courses 
are marked on the timetable and will be held on Microsoft Teams.

You will receive detailed information around one week before the class is due to start (room number, access instructions etc.)

 

There is free parking on campus after 4PM but all other regulations (double yellows, disabled bays, hatched areas, etc) apply at all times for safety and equality.


How can I apply?

 

If enrolment is open and there is space left in your class of choice, you will be able to pay and enrol using the online store. Completing the Online Store payment is the only step you need to take to ensure that you have a place.

When should I apply?

 

As soon after enrolment opens as possible! We enrol on a first-come, first-served basis.

Can you reserve places?

 

We do not reserve places.

Can I come to a taster lesson?

 

We do not offer taster session. If you are unsure what level to choose, please have a look at the description of levels or contact us before making a purchase.

 

Are evening language courses eligible for CAS?

 

The Evening Classes are not eligible for CAS. Student visas can only be issued for credit bearing courses.

 

Teaching

Language Tutors

Our experienced and friendly language tutors can provide language tuition for beginners through to advanced students.

How long are your classes? How frequently do they occur?

The term 1 and term 2 evening language courses last for 12 weeks, and as a student, you will attend one class per week. All classes last for 2 hours.

The term 3 evening language courses last for 6 weeks, and as a student, you will attend one class per week. All classes last for 2 hours.

Class size

Term 1 and 2:  

A maximum class size 20 for campus based courses.

A maximum class size 12 for online courses.

Term 3:

A maximum class size 16 for term 3 conversational courses.

Can I buy any material in advance of my class?

Please do not purchase the textbook until the course is confirmed to run. You will receive an email approximately 1 week before the course starts to confirm the course is running. Please refer to the course descriptor to confirm the course textbook and the correct edition.

What should I do if I miss a lesson?

Contact us and we may be able to send you some materials to complete on your own time to catch up. 

 

Can I access the library facilities as an evening class student?

Evening Classes students do not gain access to the library facilities

Course Credits

Can I get course credits from your evening language courses?

Our classes are not credit bearing.

Can I get a certificate of attendance?

Yes. You must have attended 70% of the classes in your course for this. If you require a certificate at the end of the course, please submit the following information by email to lc-eveningclasses@abdn.ac.uk. An electronic version of the certificate will be sent to your email address.

What is your refund policy? What if I want to drop out?

On the evening class programme, should you have a problem with any aspect of the course provision, please contact the Language Centre Admin Team if the issue cannot be resolved with the course tutor.
