The University of Aberdeen gives a warm welcome to Ian Whitehurst as Honorary Lecturer. Ian’s addition to our Law School strengthens our links to the practice of international crime at a challenging time for the international legal community.
Ian is ranked in the major legal directories (Chambers and the Legal 500) as a leading individual at The Bar in England & Wales in the areas of crime, fraud, confiscation, business crime and regulatory law. He is based in Liverpool, London and The Hague. He is also admitted to the Bar of Northern Ireland and has rights of audience in Kazakhstan.
Ian is on the List of Counsel at the International Criminal Court and the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. He is a senior prosecution counsel in England & Wales, on the Specialist List of Regulatory Counsel instructed to deal with the most complex of technical and regulatory offences and has a heavyweight criminal defence practice.
In addition to his criminal and regulatory practice both domestically and on an international basis, Ian is on the list of arbitrators at a number of arbitral institutions around the world. He has a developing practice in arbitration and public international law matters.
Ian visited the University for the first time in person in February 2023 and delivered a lecture on cyber crime and cyber warfare and the impact on international legal norms. It is an area which he will seek to develop with the existing academic community in Aberdeen and intends to lecture extensively upon it in the coming years. Prior to this, he had given several lectures with staff from Aberdeen University on aspects of cyber crime and data.
Ian has been an advocate for over 25 years and his experience in a variety of tribunals and courts will be invaluable to our student cohort as he brings practical insights into trial advocacy and strategy and tactics during the litigation process.
Ian is a valuable member of our external teaching staff and has a strong commitment to teaching and developing and expanding the links between the academic world of law and the day to day practice of complex and challenging litigation.
We welcome Ian and we are looking forward to him developing an innovative approach to the teaching of law which will mix the academic with the practical.
