Professor Justin Borg-Barthet of the University of Aberdeen has been reappointed to the European Commission's Expert Group Against SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation), recognising his continued leadership in efforts to protect freedom of expression and strengthen democratic participation across Europe.
The European Commission's Expert Group Against SLAPP advises the Commission on policy and legislative initiatives designed to combat abusive legal actions that seek to intimidate journalists, academics, civil society organisations, human rights defenders and others who speak out in the public interest. The group plays a central role in supporting the implementation and development of anti-SLAPP measures across the European Union.
Professor Borg-Barthet, an expert in EU law and private international law, and founder of the University of Aberdeen's Anti-SLAPP Research Hub, has been at the forefront of international research on the legal mechanisms needed to counter abusive litigation. His work has contributed significantly to European debates on anti-SLAPP reform and helped inform policy and legal drafting discussions that ultimately led to legislative action at EU level.
