The Death & Law RSE project at the University of Aberdeen School of Law held the first of three hybrid workshops on 25th June 2026, generously supported by a Research Collaboration Grant from the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This workshop was centred on one of the project's key themes: Death, Identity and the Posthuman Condition. Participants were invited from institutions across the UK to discuss a range of issues, including the recognition of legal personhood for the deceased, the emergence of digital avatars and other posthumous technologies that utilise the deceased's data, and the legal recognition of death in nature. Discussions helped to inform work on an edited volume for the project.
