Just Transition Lab delivers report on regional planning for Scotland's Just Transition Commission

The Just Transition Commission was in Aberdeen today (Thursday, 22 May) to present its new report and recommendations for a just transition in the north-east of Scotland.

Researchers at the University’s Just Transition Lab have been working with the Commission by delivering research on regional just transition planning with the north-east as the case study.

The Just Transition Lab report acknowledges that Aberdeen and the north-east is the region of the UK where the current energy transition is likely to have its most concentrated social and economic effects over the coming decades. It provides research and evidence on the following topics:

• High level principles and governance arrangements for approaches to just transition planning at regional and site scale

• Relevant models of regional just transition planning from other jurisdictions

• Current planning and policy initiatives for the north-east of relevance to just transition questions

• Options for just transition planning for the area

Commission co-chairs, Professor Dave Reay and Satwat Rehman, said: “The Just Transition Lab has done important work over recent years in advancing our understanding of critical elements of our agenda, most notably through their report on Measuring a Just Transition in the North East of Scotland.

“We are grateful to Daria and her colleagues for their work on this report, which has supported the Commission in deliberating and agreeing upon our formal recommendations regarding regional and site-specific just transition planning.”

Dr Daria Shapovalova said: “It was a pleasure to engage with the Commission on this project, so important and relevant to our region. We hope our research can be useful in regional Just Transition planning in Scotland and beyond.”
