Service Description

The Remote Access service provides staff and students with secure, authenticated access to personal and shared network filespace and to web-based resources from outwith the university network.

Features

Direct Access

  • Secure, authenticated, ‘always-on’ connection for University owned and managed Windows 7+ laptops
  • Access via Windows Explorer or My Computer
  • Access to all facilities available on campus, including personal filespace (H: drive) and, where applicable, shared network drives

Remote VPN (SSL VPN)

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for personal devices and University devices not supported by Direct Access
  • Access via a web browser
  • Access to personal filespace (H: drive) and to web-based resources. Where appropriate, some users may also be able to access shared network drives
  • Vendor supported platforms include Windows 7+, Mac OS X 10.7+, Linux kernel, iPhone/iPad, Windows Mobile, Android

VDI

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via a web browser or VMWare client
  • Access to corporate applications, home drive, team drives, standard office software
  • Access to Internet/library resources normally only accessible on campus.
  • Does not allow for data transfer between your remote computer and campus

SSH gateway

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via ssh client
  • Access to linuxserv, HPC (Maxwell) and other ssh servers
  • Access should be requested via Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk

SCP/SFTP

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via SCP or SFTP client (e.g. WinSCP)
  • Access to your H drive
  • Access should be requested via Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk

  • Registered Staff and Research Postgraduate students with domain joined, Windows 7+ laptops

Remote VPN

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

VDI

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

SSH gateway

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

SCP/SFTP

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

Service Hours

Direct Access

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year – excluding fourth Thursday each month from 1.00am to 3.00am for patching

Remote VPN

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

VDI

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

SSH gateway

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

SCP/SFTP

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

Support and Documentation

Request Process

  • Direct Access is enabled automatically on University owned and managed Windows laptops.
  • Remote VPN is a self-service function. Download and install the Remote VPN client from https://remote.abdn.ac.uk
  • VDI is accessed via a web browser, free app or by installing the VMware Horizon Client – see user guide.
  • SSH gateway - To request access, contact the IT Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk
  • SCP/SFTP - To request access, contact the IT Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk
  • To request access to shared network filespace, contact the IT Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk

User Responsibility

  • Users are expected to comply with the University’s Conditions for using IT Facilities
  • Remote VPN has been tested by IT Services staff on a variety of platforms and operating systems. However, IT Services is not responsible for any software/hardware conflict or failure on personal devices that may occur as a result of the Remote VPN installation. Users who are in doubt should contact the IT Service Desk before installation.
  • Where access is being granted to a contractor, users are expected to comply with the University’s Contractor Access to University of Aberdeen IT Systems: guidance.

Costs

  • No charge
