Remote Access

Service Description

The Remote Access service provides staff and students with secure, authenticated access to internal resources (such as personal and shared network filespace and web-based resources) from outwith the university network.

Features

Direct Access

  • Secure, authenticated, ‘always-on’ connection for University owned and managed Windows laptops
  • Access to all facilities available on campus, including personal filespace (H: drive) and, where applicable, shared network drives

F5 VPN (replacing Direct Access)

  • Secure, authenticated, ‘always-on’ connection for University owned and managed laptops
  • Access to all facilities available on campus, including personal filespace (H: drive) and, where applicable, shared network drives

Web VPN

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for personal devices
  • Access via a web browser
  • Access to certain University systems and resources, such as MyHR.
  • You can access this service from many different platforms including Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android.

VDI

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via a web browser or VMWare client
  • Access to corporate applications, home drive, team drives, standard office software
  • Access to Internet/library resources normally only accessible on campus.
  • Does not allow for data transfer between your remote computer and campus

SSH gateway

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via SSH client
  • Access to on-campus Linux related resources
  • Access should be requested via Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk

SFTP

  • Secure, authenticated remote access solution for any device
  • Access via SFTP client (e.g. FileZilla, WinSCP)
  • Access to your H drive
  • Access should be requested via Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk

F5 VPN

  • Registered Staff and Research Postgraduate students with F5 enabled University laptops

Web VPN

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

VDI

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

SSH gateway

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

SFTP

  • Registered Staff and Students of the University
  • Authorised External (e.g. consultants, visitors, etc.)

Service Hours

Direct Access

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year – excluding fourth Thursday each month from 1.00am to 3.00am for patching

F5 VPN

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

Web VPN

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

VDI

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

SSH gateway

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

SFTP

  • 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year

Support and Documentation

Request Process

  • Direct Access is enabled automatically on University owned and managed Windows laptops (if not replaced by F5 VPN).
  • F5 VPN is enabled automatically on recently issued  University owned and managed laptops.
  • Web VPN is a self-service function. Access the Web VPN at https://remote.abdn.ac.uk
  • VDI is accessed via a web browser, free app or by installing the VMware Horizon Client – see user guide.
  • SSH gateway - To request access, contact the IT Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk
  • SFTP - To request access, contact the IT Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk
  • To request access to shared network filespace, contact the IT Service Desk - servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk
