Guest Accounts
Note: Guests who require only basic internet access on personal devices should use the free public wireless service, Aberdeen-city-connect. They do not need a Guest account.

Service Description

This service provides ad hoc accounts for short-term use by visiting academics, researchers, business partners, collaborators or conference attendees.

Features

  • Username and password for network
  • Basic internet access via eduroam wireless service - if required. For example if they will be visiting a building where the free public wireless service Aberdeen-city-connect is not available.
  • Access to classroom and library PCs for internet use
  • For software licensing requirements, they have a limited desktop
  • Lifetime up to 30 days

Note: Guests who require only basic internet access on personal devices should use Aberdeen-city-connect. They do not need a Guest account.

A Guest account does not provide:

  • Printing
  • University of Aberdeen email account
  • Filespace on the University's servers
  • Access to full-text Library content such as online books, journals and databases

Users

  • Staff (including honorary)
  • External (e.g. conference delegates, consultants)

Service Hours

  • The request process for guest accounts is online and self-service, so is available at any time (other than at times of scheduled maintenance that will be advertised in advance).

Level of Service

  • Requests for 1-5 Guest accounts - accounts are normally available within 30 minutes
  • Requests for 6-50 Guest accounts (Bulk requests) - allow up to 3 working days for bulk requests to be processed
  • Guest accounts may be requested by individual University staff

Request Process

Requests must be made on behalf of guests by the relevant University host. Hosts must be full members of staff.

1-5 Guest accounts

  • Request up to 5 Guest accounts on behalf of your Guest(s) via the Account Manager portal at https://www.abdn.ac.uk/accountmanager .
  • Requests are processed immediately.
  • You will then be the guest account's sponsor.

6-50 Guest accounts (Bulk requests)

  • Login to MyIT at https://myit.abdn.ac.uk/ and complete the Bulk Guest Account Request form.
  • IT Services will approve bulk requests - please allow up to 3 working days for activation of accounts.
  • You will then be the guest account's sponsor.

User Responsibility

  • Hosts are responsible for passing account details to guests.
  • Users are expected to change the temporary password on first login.
  • Users are expected to comply with the University's Conditions for using IT Facilities
  • Users of these accounts are expected to comply with Using a Guest IT account

Costs

No charge.
