Presented to Professor Graeme Murray in recognition of his distinguished service as Treasurer of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland (2016-2026).
The Ritchie Medal is the Pathological Society’s most prestigious award and is awarded for a distinguished contribution to Pathology. The medal is named after the first general secretary of The Pathological Society and is only awarded on those occasions when there is considered to be an outstanding recipient.
Professor Graeme Murray is an internationally recognised academic pathologist and former Regus Chair of Pathology at the University. A leading authority in gastrointestinal pathology and colorectal cancer research, he served as a Treasurer of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland from 2016 to 2026, providing a decade of dedicated financial leadership while helping to guide the Society’s strategic and financial development.
Professor Murray is only the fifth recipient of the award since its inception in 2006 which was the centenary year of the Pathological Society. He has also previously been the recipient of The Pathological Society’s other major awards namely the Oakley Lecture in 2000 and the Doniach Lecture and award in 2019.
He was presented with the medal by the President of the Pathological Society at the summer scientific meeting of The Pathological Society of Great Britain which was held in Manchester in June 2026 and is the major international academic pathology meeting held in the UK.
