The Institute of Medical Sciences

The Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) is located on the Foresterhill Health Campus, which boasts one of the largest medical campuses in Europe, providing excellent opportunities for both discovery and translational biomedical research.

Our mission is to lead and support world-class research that enhances knowledge and improves health across the life course.

Research at the IMS

Research at the IMS is driven by more than 70 principal investigators (PIs), supported by state-of-the-art facilities and technology hubs for microscopy, histology, cell sorting, qPCR and omics facilities. Discovery and translational research is supported by grant funding from research councils (UKRI) and national and local charities.

The Centre for Genome-Enabled Biology and Medicine (CGEBM)

Provides excellent next generation sequencing capabilities, support for microarray studies, bioinformatics and biostatistics expertise as well as facilities for single cell analysis.
The qPCR Facility

For rapid, high-throughput molecular quantification.
The Aberdeen Proteomics Facility

Staff with decades of experience in high throughput protein separation, exploration and identification.
The Iain Fraser Cytometry Centre

Excellent support for multi-parameter analyses of cellular systems, and bio-contained high-speed sorting of single cells and particles.
The Microscopy and Histology Facility

Provides expertise in histology, light, fluorescence, confocal, transmission and scanning electron microscopy.
The Aberdeen Biomedical Imaging Centre

Includes preclinical and clinical MRI, PET CT and in vivo imaging.
Scottish Biologics Facility

Generates custom antibodies for research and commercialisation.
