EASTBIO is the East of Scotland Bioscience Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP).  It was established in 2012 with funding from the UKRI Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), which is part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI).  The partnership comprises the institutions along the East Coast of Scotland, a key region in the UK for life sciences in terms of both academic excellence and industrial support and investment.  The partners are Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Stirling and St Andrews; as well as SRUC, Moredun, IBiolC and the JHI.  The primary aim of EASTBIO is to deliver world-class interdisciplinary training to bioscience PhD students and to build vibrant interactive student cohorts.

The key elements of the programme consist of:

  • Structured training and mentoring programme: High-level Bioscience training (e.g. Systems Biology, Data Analysis) and Generic Skills training
  • Interactive discussion groups across the partnership based upon research themes
  • 3-month professional internship outside of academia
  • PhD projects in laboratories run by internationally renowned scientists
  • Competitive stipend at the UKRI minimum (£18,622 for 24/25), £5000 per year towards research training costs (this is reduced to £1,500 in the fourth year of the PhD), tuition fees at the UK rate.
  • Attendance at EASTBIO annual symposium

More information on the programme can be found on the EASTBIO website.

Funding Eligibility

Funding for these projects will cover home/UK fees (this includes EU nationals that hold UK settled or pre-settled status). The proportion of international students appointed through EASTBIO DTP is capped at 30% by UKRI BBSRC.
