Biography

I earned my BA from the University of California, San Diego in 2012 and my PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2017. Since then, I have completed postdoctoral fellowships at Royal Holloway (2017-2018), the University of Birmingham (2018-2019), and Duke University (2019-2021). I then joined the School of Psychology at the University of Aberdeen as a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in 2021. My research throughout this time has covered several areas of cognition such as decision-making, memory, and language. Broadly speaking, my research seeks to advance our theoretical understanding of human memory so that memory can be more reliable in applied and forensic settings.

One line of this research investigates human memory when tested on police-constructed lineups (also known as identity parades). A lineup typically consists of the police suspect and five or more physically similar fillers, all of whom are known to be innocent. The guilty suspect may be present in the lineup, but police sometimes investigate the wrong person and mistakenly place an innocent suspect in the lineup instead. I aim to design lineup procedures that maximize the chances of identifying the guilty suspect while, at the same time, minimize the chances of identifying the innocent suspect.

Another line of my research uses machine-learning techniques to analyze the natural language of accurate and inaccurate eyewitnesses. The aim of this work is to determine when verbal confidence statements are informative of identification accuracy and whether verbal confidence statements differ in diagnostic value compared to other indicators of identification accuracy such as numeric confidence ratings and response times.
