Menopause in the Workplace Comic

“Navigating Menopause in the Workplace” is an educational comic that sheds light on the realities of menopause and its impact on working women. It aims to inspire more supportive, inclusive workplaces.

About the Story

The comic follows Melanie, a working professional who begins to experience symptoms such as fatigue, confusion, and mood changes without understanding their cause. As she navigates uncertainty and eventual diagnosis, Melanie gains the confidence to speak openly about her experiences.

Her journey highlights the challenges many women face—including stigma, misunderstanding, and lack of support—and shows how raising awareness can transform workplace culture. With increased understanding from colleagues and managers, Melanie’s workplace becomes more supportive and inclusive.

Why This Matters

Menopause affects millions of women across the UK, yet many feel unable to speak openly about their symptoms at work. A study reports that one in ten women who worked during the menopause has left a job due to their symptoms, and eight out of ten women say their employer hasn’t shared information, trained staff, or put in place a menopause absence policy.

This comic is based on evidence and the lived experiences of menopause gathered through interviews. It aims to break down the barriers, encourage open conversations and empower women to seek the support they need to thrive at work.

Why a Comic?

By combining storytelling with visual art, the comic presents complex health information in an accessible, engaging, and relatable way. This creative approach helps readers better understand lived experiences, build empathy, and spark important conversations in the workplace.

A Collaborative Effort

This project is the result of collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry partners. The comic forms part of PhD research focused on building practical tools to support women experiencing menopause at work by the psychology PhD student, Chithramali Rodrigo.

Creating Change Together

This comic is more than a story. It’s a step toward reducing stigma, increasing understanding, and building workplaces where everyone can thrive. Whether you are experiencing menopause, supporting a colleague, or leading a team, we hope this resource helps you start conversations, foster empathy, and be part of positive change.
