Biography
Michiel joined the law school as a lecturer in September 2022. Previously, he lectured at KU Leuven, Belgium and Maastricht University, The Netherlands. He also was a postdoctoral fellow of the KU Leuven Research Fund. In December 2023, he will be a visiting lecturer at the University of Hannover, Germany where he will teach the Private International Law of Information Technology. In August 2023, he was a visiting researcher at the Singapore Management University.
Michiel’s expertise lies in private international law. His research focuses on civil and commercial private international law in the European Union. He wrote a dissertation on the scope of jurisdiction in matters relating to a contract in the Brussels Ia Regulation. His work on this topic was cited by Advocate General Szpunar in Case C-265/21 AB, AB-CD v Z EF in preliminary reference proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Michiel is a contributor to the Thomson Reuters Practical Law Series on Dispute Resolution, regularly providing expert updates on recent developments in the private international law of England & Wales. He also analyses decisions of the CJEU on private international law for EU Law Live.
Michiel has published numerous articles on a variety of topics in leading journals, such as the Common Market Law Review, Journal for Private International Law, Yearbook for Private International Law, and Uniform Law Review. He coordinated a submission on behalf of the Aberdeen Centre for Private International Law for the UK Government’s consultation on accession to the Hague Judgments Convention. He has also contributed to multiple studies for the European Commission on the reform of instruments such as the Rome II Regulation and the Brussels Ia Regulation.
Michiel is the convenor of the Conflict of Laws Section of the UK Society of Legal Scholars together with Dr Patricia Zivkovic.
Michiel is fluent in Dutch. He is conversational in French and has notions of German and Hungarian.

The Centre for Private International Law at the University of Aberdeen has announced the appointment of Dr Michiel Poesen and Dr Patricia Živković as the new co-convenors of the Conflict of Laws Section by the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS).
