This seminar will explore the international legal landscape with respect to protections for ‘white hat’ or ‘ethical’ hackers. White hat hackers are cybersecurity professionals who work to find vulnerabilities and prevent cyber-attacks. In this seminar, we will first examine a range of cybercrimes identified in the Council of Europe’s Convention on Cybercrime and how they have been implemented across several jurisdictions. We will then consider different approaches to ethical hacking and responsible disclosure and the extent to which current international law and norms provide sufficient protections to cybersecurity professionals.
