Professor Norrie will speak on a recent decision of the Uk Supreme Court, in which it was asked to determine whether a person with a full gender recognition certificate (GRC) recognising that their gender is female is a “woman” for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010 (EA 2010). Building on a recent blog post published by the Strathclyde Law School and a forthcoming case comment in the Juridical Review, Professor Norrie will evaluate the reasoning of the Supreme Court and its implications for the legal protections of transgender people in the future.

Kenneth Norrie is professor emeritus of the University of Strathclyde, who has taught at Scottish institutions for over 40 years. Professor Norrie started his academic career as a medical lawyer and his early publications are all in that field. Since moving to Strathclyde in 1990, his interest in family law has predominated and his major specialisms within that field are child protection and same-sex relationships. He has published very extensively in these fields. He remains involved in teaching and research projects in most private law areas, including property, delict and international private law.  He has been heavily involved in law reform, acting as Parliamentary Advisor for the Family Law (Scotland) Bill in 2005, the Adoption and Children (Scotland) Bill in 2006 and the Children's Hearings (Scotland) Bill in 2010.
