AUCEL - Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law

Overview

Based in Europe’s Energy Capital, the Aberdeen University Centre for Energy Law (AUCEL) fosters research excellence in the fields of energy and environmental law, natural resources, investments and sustainable development. AUCEL serves as a forum to create a community of collaborative work, research dissemination, research-led teaching, and public policy engagement and knowledge transfer.

Over the last few decades, we have established world-leading expertise in research on regulatory aspects of the oil and gas industry. Our focus has now expanded to cover major issues including sustainable development at fostering investments in the energy transition, climate change, technology, natural resources, as well as different methods for adjudicating disputes in the field. We pride ourselves in our commitment to the promotion of responsible and safe resource management.

The Centre comprises academics, doctoral researchers working on relevant topics in the School of Law, and associate members. It also provides a broad range of study options for professionals who are either already working in the sector, or who are interested in moving into the area. Our programmes provide research-led teaching and prepare lawyers, policy makers, academics and government officials for work in a complex and evolving context; the focus being not only upon current practice but also upon emerging trends. Our members support teaching on a variety of programmes in energy, environmental, and natural resources law.

We enjoy the benefit of being located within the University of Aberdeen, an institution with a proven track record of carrying out research across the full spectrum of the energy sector. This broad research base greatly enhances our capacity for carrying out interdisciplinary research. We regularly hold academic events and work closely with the University’s Centre for Energy Transition and welcome external researchers to get in touch about potential collaborations.
