Biography

Anne-Michelle Slater has been the Head of the School of Law at the University of Aberdeen since 2012.

She is  a Memeber of the Centre for Energy Law as a specialist in terrestrial and marine spatial planning law.

She was part of an interdisciplinary  team,  funded by NERC, undertaking cooperative participatory evaluation of renewable technology on ecosystem services using the example of offshore wind farm developments in the Firth of Forth( 2014-15).

She is also continuing work funded, in part by The Crown Estate, on development of the role of a UK marine planning exchange into a North Sea wide project, with a focus on law, in light of the requirements of the EU Directive establishing a framework for maritime planning 2014/89/EU. http://planningexchangefoundation.org.uk/reports/MPX%20Final%20Report%20AMS2.4.12.pdf

Anne-Michelle contributed to an international workshop in Oslo in March 2015 on Aquaculture and the Law, which now form part of a collection edited by Professor Nigel Bankes to be published by Ashgate in early 2016.

She is a member of the Marine Law committee of the Law Society of Scotland and an editorial board member of Environmental Law Review, the Journal of Water Law and Scottish Planning and Environmental Law (SPEL).

In 2013, she led part of an EU funded project which researched and advised on an Irish marine planning framework (2013) .  This was used in Our Ocean Wealth Development Task Force report (2015)

Anne-Michelle Slater has also written on marine and planning matters for Scottish Planning and Environmental Law (SPEL) and the Planning Law Factbook (published by W. Green) and published on aquaculture and marine planning in Environmental Law Review, Edinburgh Law Review, Water Law and Environmental Law and Management. She authored Planning Law Essentials (DUP) in 2010.

Her teaching  curently consists of an Honours course in Planning Law (LS 4547) and a postgraduate course in Maritime Spatial Planning (LS 5081). Anne-Michelle is currently supervising PhD and LLM students in the areas of energy, environmental and marine spatial planning law. 

Anne-Michelle Slater also has a particular interest in Patrick Geddes, often regarded as the father of town planning and original proponent of the concept of sustainable development. In particular she researches and writes on his contribution to the development of planning, including holistic approaches and planning education.  Most recently, she has written on the links between Geddes and Lady Aberdeen in  Ireland and Scotland.

Ms Slater is interested in supervising research students working in the following areas: environmental law (particularly marine and coastal aspects of environmental law), marine spatial planning and law, planning law (particularly planning law reform in Scotland), and sustainable development and law.
