The Mooting Society will be representing the School and University in a re-enactment of the trial of William Bury, the last man hanged in Dundee 129 years ago, at a mock trial organised by the University of Dundee.
The Mooting Teams of the Universities of Aberdeen and Dundee will re-examine the evidence which led to the execution of William Bury, the last man hanged in Dundee 129 years ago. The event will be staged as a mock trial on 3rd of February organised by the University of Dundee as part of the celebrations to mark the 130th anniversary of the establishment of the Cox Chair of Anatomy at the University of Dundee. Bury was found guilty of the murder of his wife Ellen, and hanged on April 24, 1889. In his initial confession he made a claim to be Jack The Ripper. His conviction rested largely on medical evidence which was considered contentious at the time. Now students from the Mooting Societies at the Universities of Dundee and Aberdeen will take part in a re-enactment of the trial, looking again at the evidence in the light of modern perspectives on forensic analysis. The Aberdeen team comprises Anna Black, Rostislav Gorbunov and Reuben Jarvis.
The `trial’ will be overseen by The Hon Lord Matthews, a Judge of Scotland’s Supreme Courts. The student prosecution and defence teams are being coached by Alex Prentice QC and Dorothy Bain QC, and forensic pathologists Dr Stuart Hamilton and Professor Richard Shepherd. On the day, Dr. John Clark and Professor Richard Shepherd will present for the Crown and the defence respectively with regards to forensic pathology. The jury who will decide on the verdict will be drawn from the local public. The event will be held live in Dundee Sheriff Court on Saturday February 3. It will be streamed live here at the University of Aberdeen in the James Scotland Suite MR028, MacRobert Building starting at 12.30 for 1pm on Saturday 3rd February. We look forward to seeing you there.
