Research Activity

Research at the Institute of Dentistry is conducted within several research groups, the work of which builds on areas of research excellence at the Institute of Dentistry and complementary expertise at the University of Aberdeen and NHS Grampian. Researchers and their collaborators are already making impact on the local, national and international stage.  The work of the research groups falls within the remit of three overarching themes:

  • Applied Oral Sciences

Researchers involved in this theme are collaborating with the Institute of Medical Sciences.

  • Clinical Oral Health

Researchers involved in this theme are collaborating with the Institute of Applied Health Sciences.

  • Dental Education

Researchers involved in this theme are collaborating with the Centre for Healthcare Education Research and Innovation.

The three research themes intertwine at different levels.  The Institute of Dentistry is strongly committed to interdisciplinary research through collaborations with researchers whose areas of expertise lie outside dental research.  We are committed to the generation of knowledge, skills, methodologies and mechanistic models of disease that are transferable across different research disciplines.
