Scotland's Just Transition Summit 2025

Researchers from the University of Aberdeen's Just Transition Lab (JTL) joined national leaders, community voices and innovators at a landmark event convened by Scotland's Just Transition Commission to explore how Scotland can build a resilient, low-carbon economy that is fair for all. Led by an interdisciplinary group of researchers spanning the Business School, School of Engineering, School of Geosciences, School of Law, the School of Social Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences, the Lab's researchers work at the forefront of Just Transition challenges, employing action and participatory research to facilitate insightful policy analysis and engagement with key stakeholders across civil society, government and business.

Bringing Together Industry Stakeholders from Across the UK to Discuss the Role of Supply Chains in the Energy Transition

The University of Aberdeen Centre for Energy Transition hosted a meeting with Energy Minister, bringing together industry stakeholders from across the UK to discuss the role of supply chains in the energy transition. Organised by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and hosted by the University’s Director for Energy Transition, the event saw around 15 delegates from sector bodies including OEUK, Global Underwater Hub, the Energy Industries Council, Scottish Renewables and the Offshore Co-ordinating Group join industry and academic leaders to discuss how best to use the oil and gas supply chain expertise to build the UK’s energy future. More recently, the Centre represented and presented the outcomes from the Subsurface Task Force’s activities to the Under Secretary of State for Energy, in the North Sea Transition Authority’s Aberdeen office.

Crucial Lessons for the Future of Debate About Constitutional Issues in Ireland

As part of a research collaboration between the University of Aberdeen, University College Dublin and Dublin City University, researchers have convened grassroots deliberation with women’s groups on a cross-border and cross-community basis, gauging attitudes about potential future constitutional change. The experiences the researchers have had over the last five years have culminated in crucial lessons for the future of constitutional discussion. They demonstrate the value of grassroots deliberation in reframing the constitutional agenda in ways that move beyond polarised identity politics.

These valuable insights continue to inform deliberation practices, bringing underrepresented and marginalised voices into the debate and decision-making processes.

We work at regional, national and international level with governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to influence public policy developments, positively impacting and addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We participate in cross-sectoral dialogue and collaboration with international partners to gather, measure and analyse data in support of the SDGs. Through impactful research programmes and extensive research partnerships, we help develop international best practice that contributes across all 17 SDGs, and we collaborate with numerous partners, including NGOS, to develop educational resources that support communities in the UK and overseas, as well as providing our students with volunteering and skills development opportunities to enhance the positive contributions they can make.
