Calling all young artists in Aberdeen City and Shire!
As part of this year’s celebration of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, we’re inviting pupils from P4 to S2 to take part in a poster competition. Entry is open to all pupils in Aberdeen City and Shire – not just those currently learning Mandarin. Posters can be created during class time, extracurricular clubs or at home, but they should be the pupil’s own work. Mandarin teachers will cover the festival during their regular Mandarin class time, and Dragon Boat Festival workshops are available for schools/clubs who don’t have a regular Mandarin teacher, please contact the Confucius Institute (confucius@abdn.ac.uk) for more information.
Posters can explore any aspect of the festival – whether it’s the thrilling dragon boat races, legendary dragons, or the rich cultural traditions behind the event. This year, with the Tall Ships Races Festival also coming to Aberdeen in the summer, pupils are welcome to take inspiration from boats, ships, or Aberdeen’s seafaring heritage and reflect a fusion of the Dragon Boat Festival and the Tall Ships Race in their poster designs.
There will be prizes for each year group, and all posters will be proudly displayed at the Dragon Boat Festival event at Cults Academy, where the winners will also be announced.
• Posters should be created by hand, using traditional art materials such as pencils, pens, paint, or collage. • Posters should be on A4 paper and can use any medium of the artist’s choice.• Entrants should include their name, school, and year group clearly on the back of their poster.
Posters should be handed in to the Confucius Institute, 17 High Street, AB24 3EE, or if a Mandarin teacher regularly visits your school, they can collect the posters.
