2025 PGR Writing Retreat
Dr Ben Collins and Grace Johnson

Now in its second year, the PGR Writing Retreat (14 - 17 July 2025, Kingussie) brought together 13 postgraduate researchers from Anthropology, Politics & International Relations and Sociology for four days of focused writing, professional development, and community building.
Launched in 2024 by the School of Social Science EDI Committee and supported this year by the Research Committee and Head of School’s Discretionary Fund, the retreat has quickly become a valued part of the School’s PGR experience. Participants described it as an inclusive and inspiring space that encouraged productivity, collaboration, and well-being.
Workshops covered topics including mental health and PGR life, building community, getting published, and career development after the PhD, with sessions led by Dr Ben Collins and several PGRs. The additional day funded this year was particularly appreciated, allowing participants to deepen their writing progress and strengthen peer connections.
Feedback from attendees highlighted the retreat’s impact in creating a stronger sense of belonging across departments and PhD stages. Many noted how the retreat provided a rare opportunity to engage with colleagues, exchange advice, and reflect on research culture in an informal, supportive environment.
The self-catered format, where participants cooked and shared meals from their home countries, added to the sense of community and intercultural exchange. With overwhelmingly positive feedback and returning participants from 2024, the retreat continues to demonstrate clear benefits for PGR development, inclusion, and research culture.
The EDI Committee and organisers recommend continued investment to make the Writing Retreat an annual tradition and a model of good practice for fostering PGR well-being and collaboration.
