Welcome to the Department of Sociology at the University of Aberdeen. Our department enjoys a reputation as one of the leading centres for the study of sociology in the United Kingdom (UK), being recognised both nationally and internationally for the outstanding quality of our teaching and research. The department offers a growing range of postgraduate courses including taught and research degree programmes.
Recent assessments of sociology departments in the UK ranked our department very highly. For instance, the most recent national assessment of teaching quality judged us as ‘Excellent’, the highest mark attainable, and the most recent national assessment of research quality ranked us as one of the top two departments in Scotland.
Our success is driven by the quality of our academic staff, who have gained international reputations for conducting high-quality research in the following areas:
- Religion and secularisation
- Political violence, conflict and peace
- Social Movements
- Identity Processes
- Global and political sociology
- Animals and Society
We are a medium-sized department, with 14 permanent academic staff members. This gives us the benefits of scale – in terms of the range of teaching and research interests – but allows us to be small enough to sustain an intimate and friendly atmosphere.
