Dr Malcolm Harvey and Dr Judith Sijstermans host book meeting

Nordic scholars of small autonomous and partially independent territories gathered at the University of Aberdeen in September to discuss ongoing work on an edited volume comparing several case studies.

Malcolm Harvey and Judith Sijstermans from the Department of Politics and International Relations hosted book editors Jan Sundberg and Stefan Sjöblom (both University of Helsinki) and contributors David Rezvani (Dartmouth College), Maria Ackrén and Uffe Jackobsen (both University of Greenland) for a two-day seminar which helped to make significant progress on the forthcoming book.

The international scholars were joined by Aberdeen South MP and SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn and Aberdeen City Council Deputy Group Leader for the Scottish Conservatives Councillor Richard Brooks for a short, informal Q&A session which helped to demonstrate the practicalities of the Scottish case.

Constructive discussions were had as the book structure was debated, and chapters on the successes and failures of territorial governance in each of the cases (Scotland, the Åland Islands, the Faroe Islands and Greenland) were considered and edited in turn.

‘Partially Independent Territories in Northern Europe Compared’ will be published in early 2024 by Palgrave.
