When I look back at my time with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), I can honestly say it’s been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life so far. I walked in as a student from AFG College, carrying theories and frameworks I had studied in class, and I walked out with a deeper understanding of how those ideas actually play out in the real world.
In lectures at AFG College, we often discussed policy, human rights, and international relations through concepts, readings, and case studies. At IOM, those same ideas became real people, real conversations, and real impact. I saw firsthand what it means to advocate for migrants, protect dignity, and give people a voice. Meeting individuals who have faced enormous challenges yet continue to show resilience reshaped the way I see the world. It’s one thing to study migration in a classroom; it’s another to sit across the table from someone living it.
This internship wasn’t just about building professional skills. It was about learning what it means to care, to listen, and to stand beside others in meaningful ways. Each project, every event, and even casual conversations with colleagues were constant reminders of why this kind of work matters. I felt proud to play even a small role in IOM’s mission, and in the process, my passion for humanitarian work and international relations grew stronger than ever.
What made the experience even more special was the IOM Qatar team. From the very beginning, they welcomed me not just as an intern, but as someone who could contribute. Their honesty, kindness, and unwavering commitment to doing good inspired me daily. I learned as much by watching how they handled challenges with empathy as I did from the tasks I worked on.
Walking away, I carry not only new skills and experiences but also lessons that will stay with me long after. I’m grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and everyone who made this journey so rewarding. And as I look to the future, I know the bridge between what I learned at AFG College and what I lived at IOM will guide me in whatever role I take on next.
