A team from the University of Aberdeen’s School of Psychology responsible for delivering an international conference has won three awards at this year’s Aberdeen Convention Bureau awards evening. The European Conference on Visual Perception (ECVP) took home the accolades for Best Event over 500 Delegates and the Impact Award, while Dr Danai Papadaki received the Developing Ambassador Award.
The 46th annual ECVP took place in Aberdeen from 25 to 29 August 2024. A team from the School of Psychology led by Professor Constanze Hesse and Dr Mauro Manassi organised and delivered the event.

The ECVP provided a forum for presenting and discussing new developments in the disciplines of Psychology, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Sciences, related to the scientific study of visual perception. This year’s event involved a series of tutorials, poster sessions and lectures on the extensive field of visual perception, as well as Illusion Night, which featured interactive visual experiences, demonstrations of cutting-edge research techniques such as mobile eye-tracking and virtual reality and a scientific magic show, offering insights into visual perception and attention to more than 1600 attendees.
The Aberdeen Convention Bureau awards evening, which took place at the Music Hall on 28 November, recognised the efforts of the city’s academics to bring 77 conferences and association events worth £52m to the regional economy during 2023 and 2024.
Dr Doug Martin, Head of the School of Psychology, said: “Receiving these prestigious awards marks a significant achievement for the School of Psychology and the University of Aberdeen. Being selected from such a highly competitive pool of nominees is a great honour. These awards highlight the outstanding scientific research within our School, our passion for public engagement with science and our commitment to help create a vibrant local community in the north-east of Scotland.”
Professor Peter Edwards, Vice-Principal for Regional Engagement at the University of Aberdeen, said: “The world-class research and innovation being undertaken by academics across a wide spectrum of disciplines makes Aberdeen an attractive proposition for technical and sector-based conferences and events. Attracting major conferences to the region is one of the many ways in which we support the economy of the North-east, while also raising the international profile of our academics and their research.”
