Inspired by her visits to campus throughout her childhood, Emily McKay joined the University of Aberdeen in 2021, ready to start her MA in Psychology.
Four years on, she’s now preparing to graduate and step into the world of work with the skills and experience gained through her studies.
Emily, 21, says: “I grew up in Aberdeen and used to regularly visit the campus with my mum so I've always loved Old Aberdeen. After seeing a course I adored in the place that I love, I was totally convinced to apply.
“I chose to study psychology because I’ve always been curious about why people think, feel and act the way they do. It’s a subject that connects science with everyday life and I liked the idea of developing skills that are useful in any career involving people. Whether it's research, mental health, education or just better communication, I love that psychology offers a foundation for understanding the world around us.”
Studying with the School of Psychology not only prepared Emily with the practical experience that would help in her career, but improved her confidence too.
She continues: “I've had an amazing journey at this University. I had a space to totally reinvent myself and I've been challenged to rethink my view of the world. Studying psychology pushed me to think critically and stay curious. I’m proud of how much I’ve grown both academically and personally.
“I met people who became lifelong friends, got involved in societies that made campus life feel like home and learned how to manage setbacks with resilience. Like many students, I faced moments of stress and self-doubt but I came out stronger and more confident in who I am and what I want to do next.”
Alongside her studies, Emily threw herself into student life to ensure she made the most of her time on campus.
“After attending the Art Society as a first-year student, I was eventually nominated President of the society where I raised membership numbers to a record high. I gained enough confidence to then start my own project. I wanted to tackle student community and improve it (especially after the pandemic) so I founded the In Good Company society. I was also Secretary of Her Campus and the Social Media Coordinator for BookEnds which I really enjoyed!”
Now that her time with the University of Aberdeen has come to an end, Emily is excited to take the next step and is well-equipped to succeed.
“It feels amazing to be graduating! I've loved the experience but I'm ready to move onto a new adventure. I’m so excited to be beginning my job as an Intensive Family Support Worker at Includem, where I can use all the skills I learned from my Psychology MA.”
