Granite

Granite is the first postgraduate interdisciplinary journal of Aberdeen University. The journal has been established by students for students.

This open access journal is designed to give postgraduate students of the University of Aberdeen a place to publish their work and to provide them with experience of the publishing process.

The members of the editorial team will have the opportunity to organize symposiums and become active on the review and editorial levels of Granite journal.

Any postgraduate student who wish to submit a paper or be a member of the editorial board will make a substantial contribution to the development and success of the journal. Interested participants should email the Journal editor through granite@abdn.ac.uk.

Call for Papers: “Navigating and Bridging Divides: Interdisciplinary Research in a World of Change”

Founded in 2017, Granite Journal is an interdisciplinary, postgraduate and peer-reviewed journal, published open access by the University of Aberdeen. The Editorial Board is pleased to invite graduate students (PGT and PGR) to submit abstracts or papers for consideration in our upcoming journal issue on the theme of “Navigating and Bridging Divides: Interdisciplinary Research in a World of Change”, with 250 word abstracts due on December 14th. These can be directed to granite@abdn.ac.uk.

What does scholarly rigorous, yet publicly impactful, research look like in a fractured academy and ever-changing world? Scholars today must navigate divisive boundaries and shifting public landscapes, including economic, technological, ecological, and social changes. This situation disrupts and destabilizes academic “business as usual.” However, it also offers opportunities to discover new avenues for collaboration as well as methods of investigating, presenting, and implementing interdisciplinary scholarship.

Granite Journal invites papers that investigate and address the challenges of a fractured, isolated academy within a rapidly changing world. It specifically asks what conducting interdisciplinary research means amid the myriad of contemporary challenges, such as the polarization of academic and public discourse. This volume invites submissions that examine these challenges directly, and especially those that practice interdisciplinary research in their papers.

We welcome papers from all disciplines, especially, but not limited to, papers that demonstrate or reflect on interdisciplinary practices. We encourage creative and surprising collaborative efforts.

Suggested areas for papers include, but are not limited to:

  • Investigations into fractured methodologies, assessing the benefitsof mixed methods such as qualitative and quantitative frameworks.
  • Reflections on the impact of ecological destruction and the future of the academy.
  • Decolonialisation and the future of global interdisciplinary scholarship amidst shifting international relations; the challenges of academic research across national borders and languages.
  • Applied sciences in a changing economic and social situation; the intersecting questions of health, technology, society, and money; how economic and political conditions affect health care, business, education, and law.
  • Humanities and the instrumentalisation of scholarship; research as a human end unto itself versus research that produces exploitable knowledge.
  • Law and policy amid rapidly changing global systems and unstable political institutions; how policy might be informed by applied sciences.
  • Theology and religious studies addressing the political and social challenges of emerging religious nationalisms, such as Christian nationalism.
  • Computer science and AI in collaboration with ecological science to interrogate and navigate the impact of emerging technologies on the planet.

Granite Journal is open to submissions from ALL disciplines. We wish to produce a diverse journal with papers from as many schools as possible.

We allow submissions produced collaboratively, including work produced by an undergraduate-postgraduate team.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words to granite@abdn.ac.uk by 23:59 on the 14th of December 2025. We welcome informal enquiries as to the suitability of your paper, or questions about the theme prior to this date, but abstracts submitted after this date will not be considered.

Granite Journal’s symposium will be returning this year, and all accepted authors will be invited to present their paper at the symposium on the 15th of March 2026. Authors will then be expected to submit their final paper by the 29th of March 2026. It will then undergo a double-blind peer review. Please note, manuscripts from individuals who have not previously submitted an abstract will still be considered for publication; however, we cannot guarantee acceptance of an article if an abstract has not been approved. Original research articles must be 4,000-6,000 words excluding the abstract, bibliography, and appendices.  Commentaries and letters to the editor must be 1,500-2,000 words.
