Biography

I obtained the BSc in Biology in 2008, and the Doctorate degree (Cell Biology) in 2014 from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, University of Coimbra, Portugal. My work was focused on numerous aspects of cellular and, particularly, mitochondrial biology, namely, mitochondrial biogenesis, mitochondrial fission and fusion and also autophagy/mitophagy. The main subject of my work was to understand the relation between diabetes and the propensity do develop dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease. In 2017, I joined the team of Dr. Charles Harrington at the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen. My research interests include the understanding of neuropathological processes, uncovering of therapeutic targets and study of efficient therapeutic approaches to tackle progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
