Biography

My current keen interest in researching the complexities of EFL materials and their challenges in Southeast Asia reflects my commitment to improving educational practices in the region. My previous educational background in language education, which provided me with a strong foundation in linguistic theory and pedagogical strategies, enhanced my academic experience. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have gained valuable practical experience as a BIPA teacher, where I assist Scottish-Indonesian teenagers in learning the Indonesian language, and as a freelance interpreter (Bahasa Indonesia in Aberdeen, UK), where I help English and Indonesian speakers communicate effectively. My professional affiliations, including my position on the provincial board of the Indonesian Teacher Association in Maluku, demonstrate my multifaceted approach to education as well as my dedication to fostering cross-cultural understanding and professional development in the field of language education.

Research

Research Overview

I work primarily in the fields of applied linguistics and language education. I concentrate on the fundamental processes and goals of reading, emphasising their critical roles in language acquisition and literacy development among students. My research focusses on innovative methodologies for improving language teaching practices, with the goal of increasing students' engagement and comprehension skills in a variety of educational settings. In addition, I investigate character education in primary schools, conducting sociological reviews to determine how language education can effectively instill moral values and support the holistic development of young learners. Through these efforts, I hope to connect theoretical insights with practical applications, thereby improving educational outcomes and cultivating a deeper understanding of language and its role in the learning process.

Current Research

My on-going research focuses on locally produced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) materials throughout Southeast Asia, focussing specifically on Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. My research examines the distribution of skills in these materials, utilises quantitative corpus analysis, and incorporates multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) within the context of educational theory. I conduct critical discourse analysis (CDA) to investigate the representations of culture, gender, and identity present in both texts and images.
