Biography

Dr Andrew Phillips
Digital Research Business Manager

Dr Andrew Phillips provides strategic direction for the University of Aberdeen’s wider digital research ecosystem and advanced computational infrastructure. A champion of institutional capability and collaborative culture, Andrew is the Principal Investigator for the UKRI-funded dRTP ATLAS project, an innovative initiative that utilises the Student Software Factory as a safe testbed to transition technical professionals into strategic leaders. He plays a critical role in institutional governance, having recently convened the University's response to the UKRI Research Data Management policy and acted as Clerk to the Digital Strategy Committee. He also represents the University on the UCISA Digital Research Committee to support national sector alignment.

Andrew’s leadership is rooted in a deep understanding of the academic landscape. Following a PhD in Medical Sciences and postdoctoral research in the UK and USA, yielding first-author publications in PNAS, he spent 15 years in the Research and Innovation directorate as a Research Development Executive. In this capacity, he negotiated complex multi-party commercial contracts, managed intellectual property, and supported the acquisition of tens of millions in research funding. He also successfully deployed internal strategic funding, including BBSRC and NERC block grants, to pump-prime interdisciplinary and early-career research.

Andrew is passionate about using evidence and technology to drive institutional performance, as evidenced by his pivotal roles in adopting Worktribe to streamline research administration and deploying Power BI dashboards to empower Heads of Schools with data-driven decision-making.

Today, Andrew continues to directly support the research community and his work contributes to ensuring the University of Aberdeen remains at the forefront of digital research innovation and collaborative excellence.
