Biography
Dr Ali Rohan is a Lecturer specialising in Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Computer Vision, with a focus on developing intelligent robotic systems capable of operating autonomously in complex and unstructured environments. His work spans aerial, surface, and underwater robotic platforms, with particular emphasis on perception, sensor fusion, and learning-based approaches for robust navigation and decision-making.
His research addresses fundamental challenges in autonomy where sensing is unreliable or degraded, such as underwater, disaster, and low-visibility environments. A central theme of his work is understanding how sensor limitations, particularly visual degradation, affect machine perception, depth estimation, and SLAM, and developing AI-driven solutions that enable robots to operate reliably despite these constraints. His research contributes to autonomous technologies relevant to net-zero transitions, offshore inspection, environmental monitoring, and operations in hard-to-access environments.
Dr Rohan holds a PhD in Electrical, Electronics, and Control Engineering from Kunsan National University, South Korea, where his doctoral research focused on AI and computer vision for autonomous aerial systems, including multi-modal perception for surveillance, search, and rescue.
He has held research and academic positions in both the UK and South Korea, contributing to projects in autonomous systems, industrial AI, condition monitoring, predictive maintenance, and sustainability-driven applications. His broader expertise includes machine learning, signal and image processing, intelligent automation, and the integration of AI into real-world robotic systems.
