Hidden REF Non-Traditional Output Workshop
-

This interactive workshop explores how a broader range of research outputs can be recognised and assessed within the Research Excellence Framework (REF). Participants will consider the role of not-traditionally submitted outputs (NTOs) in shaping a more inclusive and effective research culture, and how REF processes can support this shift.

Date: Friday 2nd October 2026

Time: 12pm to 4pm

Venue: Bishop's Table, Crombie Halls - (Crombie Halls | The University of Aberdeen).

Lunch: Included

Cost: Free of charge

The event will be delivered by individuals from the Hidden REF organisation – more details can be found here: Home - Home - The Hidden REF.

The session will include breakout group discussions in which participants assess a small set of NTOs using the REF criteria of originality, significance and rigour. These example outputs will be shared a couple of weeks in advance to allow for light pre-reading, while leaving space for discussion and reflection during the workshop itself.

The focus is on sharing experience, surfacing challenges, and discussing how assessment decisions are made in practice - what information is useful, what is missing, and how judgements are formed. The workshop is suitable for university staff involved in REF preparation, research assessment, or research culture development, and aims to support ongoing culture change around recognising diverse contributions to research.
