    • ME33IG Introductory German for Medical Students

      The course ME33IG joins the course GM1054 German for Beginners 1 in week 7, when the medical students will be welcomed and integrated in the learning and study community of German as a foreign language.

      Since the beginners will have worked through 5 weeks of course content by then, it is important that the medical students already have knowledge of basic vocabulary and grammar to build on therefore usually standard grade or equivalent is required.

      ME33GA Advanced German for Medical Students

      The course ME33GA joins the course GM1050: German Language 1 in week 7.

      Post-Higher, A-level students would take this course. The course consists of lectures on aspects of German grammar as well as two tutorials per week in which students practice their oral skills and tutorials in which students complete written German language work, which is supplemented by homework exercises.

  • What skills does this course develop?

    • ME33IG Introductory German Language for Medical Students

      By the end of the module, students will have developed the following:

          • The ability to understand the gist of authentic spoken and written German
          • The ability to speak and write about familiar topics with a degree of accuracy and fluency
          • The ability to manipulate common German verbs appropriately in some of the major spoken tenses.
          • The ability to formulate and manipulate basic sentences
          • The ability to cope fluently and accurately in German in a variety of simulated situations
          • The ability to analyse and reflect on language, acquire the habits of autonomous learning; make appropriate use of language learning technology; acquire and apply language learning strategies.

      ME33IG Introductory German Language for Medical Students

      Language Classes: For 3 hours each week, students are introduced to key concepts of German grammar and apply the concepts and structures to a range of practice scenarios to reinforce their learning.

      Language Practicals are taught in smaller tutorial groups. These classes are designed to foster  both oral and aural skills through activities such as role plays, discussions, group work and presentations. It is expected that students bring their completed homework to class.

      Independent study: It is recommended that students spend approximately 8 hours a week working independently. This entails studying vocabulary, revising, and consolidating contents from our classes, as well as completing any additional exercises from the course book and its online materials.

      In addition, students are encouraged to make full use of German resources found on the internet, including German TV and films, podcasts, and books. Students will also be offered to participate in an online tandem exchange at the beginning of the semester (registration deadlines apply).

      100% Continuous assessment is based on;

      Weekly online quizzes in weeks 7-10 (20%)

      an oral exam in week 10  (30%)

      a written test in week 11 (50%)

      Prior knowledge of German, preferably in the form of a Standard Grade/GCSE pass, is normally required for entry to this course. However, if you are keen to proceed with the course without this qualification, please discuss with course coordinator.
