This course will start with an overview of the current educational and political drivers impacting on medical education and an account of its regulation in the UK. The course will then progress in more detail through sections on Curriculum Planning, Teaching and Learning (Practice and Theory), Assessment and finally Evaluation.
Medical Education research literature will be highlighted wherever possible throughout and it is hoped that students will have the opportunity to plan and undertake their own teaching. Students will also deliver two first year tutorials during the course.
Students will develop their writing and critical skills in relation to understanding medical education
Students will gain an understanding of the underpinning theories of learning in relation to medical education
Students will appreciate the principles underlying the design and delivery of the medical curriculum
Students will learn about key teaching skills, put these into practice and reflect on the experience for the future
Students will consider what their own teaching philosophy is and why.
What will the timetable be like?
There will be 3 tutorials per week, each lasting 2 hours.
It is expected students' private study will be approximately 10 hours per week.
How will I be assessed?
There are two written summative assessments for this course and an oral presentation
Oral Presentation 20%
Reflective report (1000 words) 20%
Review a topical area of medical education of their choice (3000 words) 60%.
