Why should I do public engagement when my finite time is clearly much better spent preparing a paper to Nature?

Your research is clearly the paramount pursuit but you should also ask why are you conducting the research in the first place, who is funding it, and what impact might it have? The time issue is a different challenge, and we can provide suggestions and solutions to help.
