We look forward to welcoming Mounir Atassi who will provide an industrial insight in dentistry.

Mounir is a qualified dentist with postgraduate clinical training in Prosthodontics and Orofacial Pain and PhD in Oral Neurophysiology from University of Dundee.  He currently manages external partnerships at GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, as well as being an honorary lecturer at the Institute of Dentistry here in Aberdeen.

Dr Rosa Moreno Lopez will present her work: “Can borderline regression method be used to standard set OSCEs in small cohorts?”  This oral communication has been accepted for the conference OTTAWA 2020: Assessment of health professionals and evaluation of programmes: best practice and future development.

Chaitanya Joshi will present his work “From Bleeding Gums to Blocked Coronaries: Detection of Periodontal Bacteria I Intra-Coronary Thrombi” which he presented at the Scottish Cardiac Society’s Autumn Meeting in September 2019.

Oral Cancer Prevention Initiatives in Sri Lanka

We look forward to welcoming visiting consultant Dr Hemantha Amarasinghe to Aberdeen in July.  Dr Amarasinghe has strong collaborations with the Institute of Dentistry which were recently strengthened through the internal GCRF funding scheme.  During his visit Dr Amarasinghe will give a talk about some exciting oral cancer prevention initiatives in Sri Lanka that he was involved in implementing.  His talk will cover the Sri Lankan oral health status and oral cancer situation, the control activities conducted, risk factor model development and its application, and ways forward in oral cancer prevention through initiatives focused on major risk factors in the country.

An Update on Dental Education - ADEE 2018 (1)

The Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) has been fostering convergence and promoting excellence in Dental Education since it was founded in 1975 as an independent European organisation representing academic dentistry and the community of dental educators.

Every year, the ADEE invites its members from all over Europe to attend the Annual Conference. The 2018 meeting was held in Oslo, Norway.

Both research seminars featured presentations made at ADEE by staff attendees.

The benefit of antibiotic prophylaxis in the management of patients who have suffered mandibular factures

We welcomed guest speaker Tony Greenstein, a senior oral and maxillofacial surgery registrar. Mr Greenstein has conducted an interesting case-control study to investigate the benefit of antibiotic prophylaxis in the management of patients who have suffered mandibular factures. The findings of the study are very important in the context of the current need of increased awareness of antibiotic stewardship among general dental practitioners.

We welcomed two BDS5 students Samuel Kent and Jonathan Lane.  Samuel Kent gave a review of risk factors for metal plate removal following bilateral sagittal split osteotomy.  Jonathan Lane spoke about video based peer supported learning amongst graduate entry dental students.

We welcomed two speakers, Dr Rasha Abu Eid, and BDS5 student Caoimhin O’Higgins.

Dr Abu Eid spoke gave an introduction to cancer immunology.  BDS5 student Caiomhin O’Higgins spoke on the role of regulatory CD4 T cells in head and neck cancer.

An Update on Dental Education - ADEE 2017

This research seminar was led by Dr Elizabeth Pryde who fed back to staff on her experiences at the Annual Conference.
