As the summer approaches our new Director has had some time to acclimatise to his new post as Director of Dentistry and to his new surroundings in Aberdeen.
However, Aberdeen is not entirely unfamiliar as Khaled has in fact returned to us in this beautiful part of the country, bringing with him a wealth of national and international education and clinical experience.
Khaled gained his PhD in Orthodontics from the University of Sheffield in 2002 and, following the completion of his Postgraduate/SpR Training Programme at Sheffield’s Department of Child Dental Health and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, was awarded a Membership in Orthodontics of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh and a Fellowship in Dental Surgery (Orthodontics) of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Khaled joined Newcastle University and Newcastle Dental Hospital and James Cook University Hospital (post-CCST clinical academic training) as a Clinical Lecturer/Senior Registrar in Orthodontics. During this time he gained a "Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy” and following the successful completion of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (ISFE), was awarded the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship in Orthodontics of the Royal Surgical Colleges and accreditation as Consultant Orthodontist in the UK.
It was at this point that Khaled first joined us in Aberdeen, as a Senior Clinical Lecturer/ Consultant in Orthodontics prior to moving to the Gulf region for 2 years at King Faisal University, and 5 years at the University of Sharjah, UAE. Professor Khalaf has returned to Aberdeen in 2022 as Director of the Institute of Dentistry and Professor of Orthodontics.
Professor Khalaf’s main research interests include Hypodontia; consumer-based orthodontic treatment need and outcome; 3D imaging in orthodontics; evidence-based orthodontics (RCTs, systematic reviews and meta analyses); medical/ dental education research.
