Of Caldwell. Politician and author. Born Ayrshire 1718. Studied law at Edinburgh and Leiden til 1740. Toured France. Returned to Scotland 1742. MP for Renfrewshire 1742-61. Friends with John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, and David Hume. Baron of the Scots Exchequer 1761. Rector, Glasgow University 1764-5. Died Ayrshire 1776.
