Poet and lawyer. Studied at Paris and then law at Orleans. Returned to Scotland 1513. Burgess of Edinburgh, commissioner to Parliament 1526 and 1532-46. King's Advocate 1527 (?). Private secretary to James V 1529. Lord Clerk Register, Lord of Session 1532. Acquired lands of Colinton 1527 and 1529. Ambassador to England 1542. Died 1549.
