Overview
Microorganisms bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and viruses occupy all niches of this planet, from the deepest oceans to the human body. Their success in such a wide variety of environments is dependent on their diversity and adaptability. This course is an introduction to the biology and ecology of microorganisms. Its scope encompasses the study of the organisms both in pure culture and in mixed populations in a range of natural habitats. It stresses the importance of man’s relationships with microorganisms, from disease to the maintenance of a clean environment. A field trip to a distillery to emphasize the importance of microbes in biotechnology also forms part of the course.
