Development Needs Audit (DNA)

October 1st saw the University launch the Development Needs Audit (DNA) which will replace the 6-month review for all postgraduate research (PGR) students. The DNA goes beyond simply tracking project progress, providing a structured framework to help PGR students think about the specific training they need for their research project, and also their broader development as a researcher and how to plan and prepare for future careers.

Students will develop their DNA working closely with their supervisor, and co-create a development plan that evolves alongside research and career aspirations and will be revisited throughout the research journey. Central to the process is the DNA Log, which is personalised record of reflection and planning. This will be collated through the first three months and revisited annually to update it to capture progress, achievements, and evolving goals. A summary of the DNA will also feed into the Annual Progression Exercise (APE), ensuring that PGR professional development is aligned with academic milestones.

To support students developing their DNA, the University provides an online course, a detailed guide, and support sessions. These resources ensure students make the most of the DNA and take a proactive approach to development.

The Development Needs Audit represents a significant step forward in PGR support, helping students not only to succeed in research but also to build the skills and experiences that will shape your future career.
